Cambridge, MA, November 11, 2019 – Pagos, Inc. has just announced the release of SpreadsheetWEB 6.14, introducing the new SpreadsheetWEB Connector and enhanced headers support in grid controls.

Microsoft Excel supports external references that can refer to the contents of a cell or range in another workbook. This feature essentially allows pulling data and calculations from another file, and use it in the active spreadsheet. External references are especially useful for merging data from multiple workbooks and breaking down a complex workbook into multiple smaller pieces. However, this feature also comes with some caveats, as the references are established through file path definitions on the user’s computer. This means that the workbook with external references can give errors if the target file is moved to another directory, or the main workbook is opened on another computer.

In this version, SpreadsheetWEB introduced the SpreadsheetWEB connector, which alleviates some of the common problems stemming from external workbook links, while allowing users to connect their web applications to other web services created with SpreadsheetWEB. An existing workbook with the business logic can be uploaded into SpreadsheetWEB as a web service, and can be utilized by other SpreadsheetWEB applications through API. This connector features an easy-to-use interface where users can select the specific web service and named ranges they want to use, and associate them with other named ranges in their web application.

Another important feature introduced in version 6.14 is the Superheaders. Superheaders were introduced to make it easier to create more elaborate tables with segmented data. This feature allows combining higher-level headers with the column headers in input and output grids, inside a single UI control. This way, grid tables can now better display multiple header groups in a smaller display area.

“External references are frequently used in Excel models despite their shortcomings. This is mostly due to the fact that it’s usually easier to utilize the calculations and data in an existing model, than moving everything into the same workbook. This approach also allows using Excel like a database. However, this approach doesn’t play well with concurrent usage and also can cause issues when transferring the files from one computer to another.” says Ugur Kadakal, CEO of Pagos, and continues “In this version, we’ve introduced the SpreadsheetWEB connector, which basically does the same thing, but on a web-based platform. This way, we can ensure that connection paths are never broken, while also allowing our users to connect their SpreadsheetWEB applications to other Excel models uploaded into our software.”.
